The National Hockey League, NBC Sports and the Anomaly agency sought Klip Collective’s expertise in innovative mobile outdoor projection techniques for a TV spot promoting the NHL’s 2012 All Star Game in Ottawa. The idea was to project enormous moving images of the sport’s biggest stars onto landmarks all over the Canadian capital city. These projections were then filmed and edited by Klip Collective into a TV spot.
Klip began with an extensive location scout, matching existing footage of NHL players with suitable projection surfaces. Ottawa’s many historic sites and iconic buildings were considered in an effort to make the city immediately identifiable in the finished spot.
On location, the crew and the equipment both felt the chill of the sub-zero Canadian winter over the course of multiple nights shooting from dusk until dawn. Innovative projection techniques were developed, including projecting images from a moving vehicle onto the foliage of trees along the Rideau Canal. The finished spot drew a record number of viewers to NBC’s coverage of the 2012 NHL All Star Game.
